Consumer Law

Have you been victimized by an unscrupulous business?  Are collection agencies calling you at work?  Did you purchase a product that has failed to live up to your expectations?

In today's cutthroat, competitive environment, businesses often try to get ahead by taking advantage of unsuspecting consumers.  As more and more people make purchases online, consumer fraud, data breaches, and other unlawful practices have become more rampant.  If a company has cheated you, a consumer law attorney can take proper legal action on your behalf.

Attorney Shehu has held unscrupulous businesses accountable, utilizing fee-shifting statutes to recover attorney fees and damages for his consumer law clients.

Consumer Rights

Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) make and enforce consumer protection regulations.  These two governmental agencies ensure that the marketplace is fair and open for consumers.  Unfortunately, while filing a complaint with these agencies is often a first step toward resolving a consumer claim, these agencies are inundated with consumer complaints, forcing victims to wait for justice.  To resolve your complaint promptly, you need the expertise of an experienced consumer attorney.

Shehu Legal represents unsatisfied consumers in court or before the DCP for claims involving:

  • False advertising of products and services
  • Selling faulty or damaged products
  • Undisclosed fees
  • Data breaches
  • Warranty breaches
  • Unfair trade practices or unscrupulous business practices
  • Unfair debt collection practices
  • Violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act
  • Lemon Law violations

Suppose you buy a new LCD TV for home entertainment.  The TV comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty.  However, the TV stops working after one month of use.  What do you do?  Do you contact a local electronics repair center?  Do you call the manufacturer and invoke your warranty?  What if the company simply ignores you?

Without the help of an attorney, you will face challenges filing your claim, submitting the best evidence, and arguing your case before the court or DCP.  Why waste months or years seeking a remedy when a consumer attorney can resolve your claim quickly and fairly?

Shehu Legal can assist you in understanding various facets of the claim procedure and consumer rights, which means that you will be a step closer to obtaining justice and fair compensation.

How Can a Consumer Law Attorney Help?

Deceptive Advertising

Businesses are obligated to provide truthful information to consumers.  According to consumer protection guidelines, an advertisement for a product or service must include accurate claims.  For example, a violation of consumer law would occur if a food product had advertised itself as dairy-free but actually contains ingredients derived from dairy items.

The Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA) allows aggrieved consumers to act as private attorneys general—that is, it affords them a cause of action to enforce Connecticut consumer protection statutes.  A victorious consumer may be awarded monetary compensation, punitive damages, and attorney fees.  When determining damages, expenses, and attorney fees, the court has broad discretion under CUTPA.

Warranty Breaches

Every product is warranted to function for the particular purpose for which it was intended.  In addition, some products are expressly warranted to function in a certain way for a given period.  Unfortunately, many people purchase faulty products or products that malfunction before the warranty period ends.

Customers expect products to satisfy a specific quality and performance standard when they purchase them.  Consumers may bring a claim in state or federal court when products fall below this standard.

Data Breaches

Companies of all sizes frequently store sensitive financial and medical information electronically.  Protecting personal information is critical in today's market.  Unfortunately, companies frequently fail to protect their customers' personal information, resulting in data breaches with potentially disastrous repercussions.

We are dedicated to upholding everyone's right to privacy.  Shehu Legal has the experience and understanding to prosecute your data breach case.  In addition, if you have been victimized by a corporation or healthcare institution, Shehu Legal will pursue justice on your behalf.

Unfair Debt Collection Practices

The United States Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ("FDCPA") and the Connecticut Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ("CFDCPA") protect borrowers and consumers from unfair debt collection practices.  Such practices cause emotional and financial harm to consumers.  The laws protect against unwarranted and abusive debt collection methods, harassment by creditors, and deception.  In addition, aggrieved consumers may take action and recover statutory damages, money damages, and attorney fees from creditors or third-party collection agencies.

The FDCPA and other relevant regulations must be well understood before a consumer takes legal action against disreputable debt collectors.  A consumer attorney with extensive knowledge and experience can help you turn the tables on debt collectors.  Shehu Legal will work to help you obtain compensation quickly.

Lemon Law Violations

Maintaining a good credit score is vital to everyone in this credit-driven society.  But unfortunately, it's not uncommon to see misleading or incorrect credit information affecting a loan or employment application.  That's why the federal government has enacted Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a law governing consumer credit information.  This law entitles the customers to track their credit score,  and it requires a credit rating agency to rectify any wrong information.

If you think something on your credit report is inaccurate, give us a call, and we'll take a look.  The defendants are obligated to cover our legal expenses under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.  That means you won't have to pay for retaining our services.

FCRA Violations

Connecticut was one of the first states to enact a Lemon Law—a statute that protects consumers against faulty motor vehicles either less than two years old or under 24,000 miles.  According to estimates, approximately $60 million in refunds have been provided to consumers with defective vehicles since the statute was enacted.  Connecticut's Lemon Law mandates that automakers either replace defective vehicles or repurchase them if they are unable to repair them after a reasonable time.  Manufacturers typically have to replace or buy back a vehicle if it can't be repaired after four attempts.

Shehu Legal will conduct a thorough investigation into the details of your case.  If you have bought a car that turns out to be a lemon, you can count on Shehu Legal to exhaust every legal avenue when pursuing justice on your behalf.  We will help you return, repair, or replace your vehicle as quickly as possible.
